Many of the most common causes of snoring could be prevented by more healthy lifestyle choices. Many people don’t even realize how bad their snoring problem is until their spouse or roommates inform them that it keeps them up all night. Unfortunately, it isn’t just others that lose sleep over snoring. The snorer generally doesn’t get a very restful night of sleep either.

Habits that Cause Snoring

The causes of snoring are varied but most of them are related to how a person chooses to live. Many people snore because they eat too much and don’t exercise enough. This can lead to obesity, which is one of the primary causes of snoring. Other lifestyle choices that affect snoring are: drinking too much alcohol, smoking cigarettes, or taking sleeping pills. The position in which one sleeps can affect snoring and so can nasal congestion.

Food Intake

For those that eat too much but don’t exercise enough, snoring and obesity could become a problem. Having too much skin and fat near or around the throat area is one of the more common causes of snoring. Those that are overweight may snore because the throat muscles aren’t strong enough to hold open the airways while they sleep. Snoring is very common for those who are even a little bit overweight and can be remedied through healthy lifestyle choices.

Alcohol Consumption

One of the other common causes of snoring is related to alcohol consumption. Alcohol can reduce the reaction time of muscles in the body. It also depresses much of the nervous system functioning, which can lead to the relaxation of muscles in the throat that aren’t normally so relaxed. These symptoms of drinking are one of the causes of snoring. Luckily, this problem can be solved easily by either giving up alcohol altogether or by reducing alcohol intake enough to reduce snoring.

Orientation While Sleeping

The position we sleep is sometimes one of the causes of snoring. This is particularly true if you are a little bit overweight. Sleeping on the back is generally associated with snoring because the position causes the airways to be compressed. Often rolling onto one’s side is enough to solve a snoring problem.

Nasal Problems

Many people that don’t normally snore find themselves snoring when they are seriously congested. This is one of the causes of snoring that can be easily treated with medication. If you are congested as a result of allergies then there are many antihistamines available over the counter. A head cold that causes stuffiness can often be relieved through the use of a humidifier in the room.
