A tattoo can be a permanent piece of artwork, or a symbol of something that you never want to forget. Many couples have each others names tattooed on themselves, or a certain date that is important.

Getting a tattoo is not something that should be rushed in to, keep the following tips in mind when you are considering it, as safety is paramount.

Be aware of the risks involved. Getting a tattoo can trigger a severe allergic reaction, causing the area in and around your tattoo to become very red and extremely itchy.

Along the same lines, irritations and infections can set in, some of which can be very serious. If the needles have not been properly cleaned and are contaminated with any kind of disease, these can easily be transmitted into your blood stream.

The most serious ones are tetanus, hepatitis and HIV. Choosing where you go will eliminate these risks, that is why there should be careful planning before you go ahead.

A clean and reputable tattoo parlor will proudly display their licenses and put safety first. Watch them first and ensure they wear gloves at all time, which are changed for each customer.

The tools should always be sterilized and watch for them using new needles that come straight out of sterile packaging. If you think that a tattooist is sharing needles, stay well away.

There are steps you must take yourself to reduce the risk of infection. Keep you tattoo covered for the first 24 hours, and then make sure it is always kept clean with soap and water. You may want to use a cream with antibiotic properties to keep any infections at bay.

Wear clothing that is baggy and comfortable, keep out of the sun and keep the skin around your tattoo moisturized. It normally takes approximately 2 weeks for the healing process to complete. If you suspect any kind of infection, your doctor is the person to see.

At the end of the day, a short time doing a bit of research will make getting your tattoo what it should be; an enjoyable experience.
