As we get older our trips to the doctor increase in frequency, and also in importance. Going to see your general practitioner won’t cut it anymore either. You will begin seeing many specialists. Most older people must see dermatologists, cardiologists, orthopedic surgeons, allergy specialists, rheumatologists, (heaven help us) oncologists, and others.

Your regular family doctor can and will handle many of the problems you will face as you approach your golden years. However, even if you have had the same doctor for years, eventually they will begin referring you to specialists. Quite often, many people do not go see a specialist until after they wake up in an emergency room after a stroke or heart attack. Many times these emergency health issue could have been avoided with a little special and preventative care.

Once you hit 40 (that is certainly not old) you should have you blood pressure checked regularly. Between 40 and 50, checking it once every month or so should be enough unless of course a problem is found. However, after 50, both men and women should have their blood pressure checked at least once a month, and probably more often.

Once you hit 65 you should schedule monthly doctor visits whether you are sick or not. Quite often, a regular physical check up can tip off a doctor to a more serious problem that may lead to a trip to the emergency room later. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of medicine.

All of us can eat a healthy, low fat diet and engage in regular low-impact exercise. Just staying trim and fit can eliminate many emergency health situations for older people. Staying trim and fit also is the best way to avoid high blood pressure, which leads to hardening of the arteries, heart attacks, and a host of other health problems.

Exercise and proper diet are really the best way to slow the aging process. Regular, low impact use of your joints and muscles is great preventer of arthritis. Exercise also elevates your heart rate and keeps you blood flowing, thus helping to keep your arteries clear. And don’t forget to get those annual checkups with your doctor. The earlier he finds any issues the easier it is to treat them.
