Though Rare, Men Can Get A Yeast Infection
Though it is not as commonly heard of in men as it is in women, men too can get a yeast infection. It is pretty much the same thing that a woman gets and has very similar symptoms and is therefore treated the same way with anti fungal creams or pills. On the body are several types of fungus that live there normally causing no ill health. This is thanks to the good bacteria also living there that control the growth of the fungus. But certain things and situations can cause an imbalance between the fungus and the bacteria allowing the fungus to overgrow because the good bacteria numbers have been depleted or destroyed. A lot of men may not even realize they have a yeast infection if they do because they expect it to be a female problem. Also a yeast infection is actually a little harder to identify in a man than a woman, after all we are built differently! Causes of it in men tend to be diabetes (yeast feeds on sugar), and unprotected sex with a infected female partner. It is important to abstain from sex while you or your partner has an infection otherwise it will become a cycle of passing it back and forth between you. Less common causes but ones to know are eating things that make your system more acidic and therefore friendly to the fungus such as corn, wheat, and barely which can have fungus in them that do this. Peanuts should be avoided as should alcohol, particularly beer, and taking a long course of antibiotics as certain types will kill the good bacteria as well as the bad. Symptoms a man should watch for are sexual dysfunction, constipation, indigestion, diarrhea, bloating, itchy flaky skin, no energy and even prostrate issues.
