An increasingly popular option for older retirees is the idea of selling the home and residing in an assisted living facility instead.

Utah is a popular destination for aging retirees. Many of these seniors have two residences; they use one to live in during the summer months, when the weather is nice and warm, then they move to the other home when the cold winter months arrive.

These retirees who make two homes and move between them are called snow birds, so named because they migrate according to the seasons as birds do. They just move north or south when the summer and winter hit so that they don’t have to endure any extremes in temperature.

Since Arizona offers very temperate winters with temperatures usually staying in the 60s, it’s a popular destination for seniors who want to avoid to brutally cold winters of other areas. They live there for six months from October to April, where they enjoy the warmth and the outdoor activities offered by assisted living facilities.

When spring hits, the snow birds move north to Utah to avoid the high temperatures of the Arizona desert. The temperature reaches the 80 degree mark in April and can rise up to 110 throughout the summer, lasting until the end of September.

This movement between climates allows aging seniors to maintain a comfortable living environment, eliminating the need to bundle up for frosty winters or endure the unbearably hot summers of some areas.

Utah offers very reasonable real estate prices as well, which tends to draw in more people. Assisted living facilities in Utah are quite cheap compared to those in some other parts of the country.

For these reasons, Utah makes a good destination for retired seniors, or really, for anyone looking to start anew in a fresh place.
