Ways To Maintain And Increase Your Brain Power
Have you noticed a change in memory or thinking for yourself or your loved ones? You may be experiencing a loss of cognitive function. This can be caused by many things, including different medicines, health conditions, and aging. You don’t have to give up though, there are ways for you to try to regain and maintain function. Keep your mind busy: You have to stay engaged and use your mental capacities, or you’ll find they dwindle. It’s the old “use it or lose it” adage, which turns out to be true in this case! Start with crossword puzzles or word games, if you don’t yet have impairment. If there has already been significant loss and crosswords are too difficult or frustrating, try word searches. You can also use coloring books, and even card games, to help you stay sharp. Medicines: Some cognitive difficulties can be treated effectively with medicine – but some medicines can also cause cognitive impairment. If you are taking painkillers, blood pressure medicines, even some medicines for bladder control, and are experiencing cognitive problems, check with your doctor. Your doctor may change your medicine or its dosage, which may resolve the problem. Some medications can help with memory impairment. There are medicines even to slow Alzheimer’s. Report any changes you see in your parents, spouse, or other elderly relatives to their doctor. The doctor will probably have enough tact not to disclose who reported the issue. You have to report the problem even if you think the doctor will likely disclose this to your loved one though. If the doctor knows that something is happening, they can test your loved one and can treat any problems that are found. Alternative remedies: Remember, just because an alternative remedy isn’t a prescription medication, that doesn’t mean that they can’t have side effects or interact with other medicines. Some remedies may be helpful though. Gingko biloba seems to improve mental function. Be careful with this one though since it does interact with some medications and can also cause stomach upset. Ginseng also can be helpful, but be careful if you have rheumatoid arthritis as some types of ginseng can aggravate arthritis. Ginseng may interact with medications as well. The author additionally regularly gives advice on topics like interactive cat toy and the cat condos.
